Appearance counts, so wear clean, neat clothing. Your clothes should
not be too flashy, either. While you want to make an impression,
you should aim for a positive one! Never wear jeans and a T-shirt, especially
slogan T-shirts. A jacket is always a safe bet for men and women,
with
slacks or a skirt. Somehow a jacket seems to pull the outfit together
and can cover a multitude of figure problems as well.
- Go easy on the
fragrances, or best, don’t wear any at all.
Many people have fragrance allergies and that includes employers.
They won’t
be able to interact with you if they’re having an allergic
reaction to your perfume or cologne.
- Wear comfortable, but professional,
shoes. You’ll be on your
feet for a long period of time, so comfort is important. However,
house slippers
clash with even the most handsome Armani suit, so make sure your
shoes complement your clothing.
- Resumes should be typed and proofread
for spelling and grammar errors, then printed on quality white
or off-white paper. Ask a
friend to read
your resume before you make your final copy. Second and third
opinions may catch errors you may not notice.
- Bring at least ten copies
of your resume in a sturdy folder to prevent crinkles and tears. Photocopy
machines will be available
for your use if
you need more copies.
- Be prepared to give references. You should
have at least three references, one of which is a personal reference.
Type
and print
your references on
the same quality paper that you use for your resume. Make
sure your name is at the top of your reference sheets.
- Bring a sincere
smile, a strong handshake, and stand up straight. Make eye contact
frequently, but don’t stare.
Employers look as much at how you say something as what
you say. Pleasant attitudes and confident
behaviors attract employers’ interest, especially
if they’re
hiring someone to interact with their clients.
- Carry breath
mints, tissues, and a black or blue pen and paper. Be
prepared to fill out applications or take
notes
about prospective
employers.
